Your Guide to CLEAN + SAFE sunscreen!

Sunscreen can be a tricky product! Between the recalls for benzene, a well-known carcinogen and oxybenzone, a hormone disruptor for coral and humans, it's confusing!

So, we are breaking down some myths and facts about sunscreen for you! Check out our list of better for you brands that can be found at most large retailers or in our shop, too.

When safer options exist, its an easy swap!

Myth 1: Higher SPF means more protection.

Sunscreen with an SPF of 30 will block 97 percent of the sun’s rays. Anything higher will protect 1-2% more. Did you also know that the SPF has no impact on the length of time sunscreen will protect you? Find a clean sunscreen you like, and reapply!

Myth 2: All sun exposure is bad.

The sun's rays kick off the chemical and metabolic chain reaction that produces vitamin D. Moderate sun exposure with proper protection is beneficial to you.

Myth 3: All sunscreen is safe.

40% of sunscreens on the market have...

  • Oxybenzone

  • Avobenzone

  • Homosalate

  • Octinoxate

  • Octocrylene

  • Cinoxate

  • Dioxybenzone

  • Ensulizole

  • Meradimate

  • Padimate O

  • Sulisobenzone

Avoid these ingredients. Unscented is best and opt for mineral based with active ingredient of zinc oxide. Also avoid sprays altogether! Even clean sunscreens aren’t safe if they’re sprays. Aerosol sunscreens have been found to be widely contaminated by the cancer-causing chemical benzene.

So, what do we do with this information!? We suggest you pick something without those ingredients listed above. Don't have a clue where to start or want to stress about it? Pick off our list of options in this post. Most can be found at large retailers and are sitting right next to the popular brands we are led to believe are safe!

You can also stop in the shop to grab Earth Harbor facial sunscreen, which goes on silky and smooth or Young Living mineral based sunscreen. We also have tallow...a lifesaver after a bad burn! And, our Soothe After Sun Gel made with aloe vera, vitamin e, and pure essential oils that cool and calm skin.
